The loving touches of Pūjya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda in establishing a Chinmaya Mission Center in the Washington, DC area are unmistakable. The consecration of Kailas Nivas and the installation of Śrī Jagadīśvara Mūrti in Silver Spring, MD, alongside the appointment of Swami Dheerananda (then Brahmachari Sudheer Chaitanya) and others, mark significant milestones in this journey.
At that time, one of Pūjya Gurudev’s messages to the lead sevaks was to create a newsletter that would inform and inspire the members at the newly established Center. Pūjya Gurudev called it Smrithi. The newsletter was meticulously prepared, published in print, and mailed to members. Over the years, it evolved into an electronic format and was published online bi-monthly under the revised name Chinmaya Smrithi, a title lovingly proposed by Swami Dheerananda. In May 2025, embracing the beauty of Sanskrit transliteration, the magazine’s name was refined to Chinmaya Smriti.
Today, Chinmaya Smriti continues to be published bi-monthly aiming to inspire members with Vedānta-inspired thoughts. Additionally, it also documents and celebrates the vibrant activities carried out across the Center, which now spans the states of Maryland and Virginia.
